TV Unit & Lounge Lighting Guide: How to Avoid Glare & Create the Perfect Setup

Setting up the right lighting around your TV area is essential for a comfortable viewing experience. Poor lighting placement can cause severe screen glare, eye strain, and ruin the aesthetic of your living room.

Whether you are designing a modern media wall or setting up a cozy TV corner, follow this step-by-step guide to place your lights correctly!

1. Install Bias Lighting Behind the TV (The Most Important Layer)

Placing lights directly behind the TV screen—known as Bias Lighting—reduces the harsh contrast between a bright screen and a dark room, making long movie nights much easier on your eyes.

  • Best Fixture: Warm LED light strips attached to the back edges of the TV panel.

  • Placement: Position the LED strip 1 to 2 inches inside the back edge of the TV frame so the light reflects softly off the wall without exposing individual LED bulbs.

  • Color Temperature: Use warm white (3000K) or neutral light so it doesn't distort screen colors.

2. Eliminate Direct Screen Glare

Screen reflections are the biggest distraction when watching TV. Managing light angles is key to keeping your display clear:

  • Avoid Opposite Lights: Never place bright spotlights, chandeliers, or uncovered bulbs directly on the wall opposite the TV screen.

  • Window Placement: If your TV is opposite a window, use blackout curtains or adjustable blinds to block direct sunlight during daytime viewing.

  • Dimmable Recessed Lights: If using ceiling spotlights, install them on dimmer switches and angle them away from the screen face.

  •

3. Accent & Decorative Lighting for TV Walls

To make your TV wall look luxury and stylish without affecting viewing comfort:

  • Vertical Slats / Panel Lighting: Install hidden LED profile channels along the sides of wooden or fluted wall panels for a modern vertical glow.

  • Niche & Shelf Lighting: Add low-intensity LED strip lights inside display cabinets or floating shelves surrounding the TV unit.

  • Spotlight Angles: Aim ceiling track lights or spotlights strictly at surrounding wall decor or artwork—never directly at the TV display.

4. Ideal Heights & Distances Summary

  • TV Mounting Height: The center of your TV screen should be at eye level when seated (typically 40 to 45 inches from the floor to the screen center).

  • Side Sconce Height: If mounting decorative wall sconces on either side of the TV wall, place them 60 to 65 inches from the floor and at least 12 to 18 inches away from the sides of the screen.

  • Ceiling Spotlights: Offset ceiling lights at least 3 to 4 feet away from the TV wall to allow light to wash down smoothly rather than casting sharp shadows.

Quick Checklist for TV Room Lighting

  1. Use Warm, Indirect Light: Avoid overly bright, cold white bulbs in the TV area.

  2. Layer Your Controls: Put TV wall LED strips and main ceiling lights on separate switches so you can dim the room when watching movies.

  3. Keep Wires Hidden: Route all power cables for TV bias lights inside wall conduits or decorative wire hiders for a clutter-free look.

Where and How to Arrange Furniture in Your Home: Easy Layout & Placement Guide

Living Room: Conversation & Comfort The living room is the heart of the home where guests gather and families spend quality time. Its layout should encourage easy conversation. Main Sofa Position : Always place your main sofa facing the primary focal point of the room (such as the TV wall, a gallery wall, or a large window). Walking Space : Keep at least 15 to 18 inches of space between the sofa and the coffee table so people can move around comfortably.
